Peri Prosthetic Joint Infection (PJI)
Peri-prosthetic infection and Musculoskeletal infection is a challenge to most Orthopaedic surgeons and the patient as well. Infection can occur in the bone or the joint or the newly placed joint or in the newly placed implant.
Infection needs to be managed in a step-wise protocol. The causative organism needs to be identified, targeted antibiotics needs to be started and thorough surgical debridement is of utmost importance.
Peri-Prosthetic Joint Infection(PJI) is a dreaded complication post Joint replacement surgeries. Such cases require accurate identification of organism, implant may be retained or removed based on severity and loosening and temporary antibiotic spacer is kept. Once infection subsides stage 2 of the procedure is done in which new joint is kept. Hence it is a staged treatment. Having worked at high volume joint replacement centres. We have managed a lot of such cases.
